In Riyadh, during the Ramadan month, most shops remain closed in the morning. All food outlets are also closed during the day and they only start business after the Asr prayer which is about 4.30pm.
Only after the terawih prayers, you can see people flocking out the streets, cars jamming the roads and shopping malls bustling with business. This scenario will normally start after 9.30pm.(after terawih prayers) As the shops opened only in the evening, most shops stay opened till 2am!
Today I had the privilege of go to Aloweis market or the arab souk with my ladies friends(zura & nani). They wanted to find some scarfs to bring back as souvenirs for their friends back in msia as they ar going back for hari raya. We went out at 11pm (zura hubby drove us there and become or body guard, he he...) and we were surprised that the street are jam packed with cars and it is not even the weekend! Looks like the people here are the same as us in msia. shopping for Eid/Raya is a must!
Arab souk is a place where u can find lots and lots of arbayas, ladies clothes and nick knacks(now you can also buy mercun and bunga api (fireworks) there. It is like any bazaar in malaysia. Parking spaces are crowded(that's why hubby does not like going there) U have to bargain the price to get value for money and there are always so many people there!
I wish I could take pitures of the souk but here picture taking in public places are usually prohibited. You can go to jail or that! Even if we took photos outside or in the mall,usualy sorok sorok je with our hp.
Today we enjoyed our escapade as we went out without the kids. We walked in into all the shops we fancy, checked out the arbaya latest fashions (so many, rambang mata!) and my friends got to buy the souvenirs they wanted.
We didn't realised that its was already 1.30am when we finally went back to car! The Souk is still bustling with people. Even at that time, trafic were quite heavy and shops are still open for business. I arrived home at 2am, grinning sheepishly at my hubby :-)
Like my friend suza said, it seemed like in Riyadh, during ramadan month, malam jadi siang and siang jadi malam. I can't agree more! I still feel amazed that we can shop at the wee hours of the day. No wonder mornings are very quiet! Everyone is catching up on their sleep during the day ;-P

Elisa, I tink u have been to arab souk aka Aloweis market. Nearer to al Taun side. Ala ala dierah jugak, tapi more happening coz its nearer to the city :-)
